iPhone users and fans of the phenomenal game Fortnite will once again be able to play it on their smartphones through Microsoft’s remote video game service, Xbox Cloud Gaming.

This game, which has become an ultra-popular universe, has not been available on Apple-branded devices since August 2020, when Apple entered into a legal dispute with Epic Games, the parent company of Fortnite. But fans can now find the shooting and survival game right on their mobile internet browser without having to download it from the App Store.

In the 26 countries where you can play via the cloud (streaming, remote), “you just need a Microsoft account,” the IT group explained in a press release, and an iOS (Apple) or Android (Google) smartphone or tablet, or a computer with Windows (Microsoft operating system).

“Great news!”

This is the first “free” game (but with paid options) that Microsoft is adding to its Xbox Cloud Gaming platform, but more are expected to follow. “Great news!” exclaimed Tim Sweeney, boss of Epic Games, on Twitter. “Fortnite is now available for FREE in-browser streaming on iPhone, iPad and Android via Xbox Cloud. No subscription required, no 30% Apple tax.

Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store after Epic attempted to circumvent its rules and payment system, allowing for 30% of the game’s revenue from selling power-ups, costumes and other virtual items. The video game publisher then filed a complaint against the California group for abuse of dominance, accusing it of exercising a monopoly on the purchase of goods and services in its online store.

Alternative payment

In November 2021, a U.S. federal judge ordered Apple to allow an alternative payment system in the App Store, but also ruled that Epic failed to prove that Apple violated copyright law.

The electronics giant is also fighting several European regulators over this. He believes that the App Store is the best guarantee of payment security and data privacy. According to Backlinko, over a billion people around the world use an iPhone. Fortnite is one of the most popular video games in the world with nearly 200 million registered players.
