Change of owner in Plug In Digital. This French video game group has just incorporated into its capital the British venture capital firm Bridgepoint (which led the round table in which Eurazeo also participates) which becomes the majority shareholder for 70 million euros and makes its first investment there in video games. “We were convinced by Plug In Digital, which has the dual role of publisher and distributor. Today, platforms are multiplying in the sector and content is essential ”, says Olivier Nemsguern, partner at Bridgepoint.

Created in Montpellier in 2012 by Francis Ingrand, who remains in charge and retains a significant part of the capital, Plug In Digital initially focused on the digital distribution of third-party games on numerous online platforms (PC, mobile devices, “games on the cloud” … ). A historical activity that still represents 70% of its income.

In the mid-2010s Plug In Digital added a string to his bow by becoming a publisher of video games developed by independent studios. This can translate into financing, distribution, or even communication with ultimately a 10-50% revenue share for the Montpellier company.

No more “double A” games

In 2017, the group scored their first hit with the song “A Normal Lost Phone” (from Accidental Queens, a Tourcoing studio). With a mini-production budget of 25,000 euros, the game (which highlights discrimination against the LGBT community) was critically acclaimed and sold 400,000 units. Le plus grand succes (in volumes of sales) on the Plug In Digital journal is at the latest and the latest with the jeu “Enterre-moi, mon amour” (co-produced with Arte France) racontant l’exil d’une réfugiée syrienne jusqu ‘In Europe.

Clear editorial options. “It’s our DNA to make these kinds of games,” said Francis Ingrand, whose group raised € 2 million for the first time at the end of 2018, with a view to boosting their publishing projects. A bet validated by the good reception that the “gamers” have given to titles released since then like “The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulette of the Disorder” or “The Forgotten City”.

With the funds raised, the group intends to change the dimension of the publication. “Plug In Digital aspires to become one of the locomotives of independent games in France,” said Judge Cédric Lagarrigue, founder and former head of the French publishing house Focus Home Interactive and now a senior advisor to the investment bank Alantra that organized this fundraising. money.

“We’re going to expand our teams, make studio acquisitions, and release more games,” explains Francis Ingrand. We will also move forward in the market with futures that are more oriented to the ‘double A’. [milieu de gamme, NDLR] with bigger budgets. “Until then, the sums allocated by the firm for the production of games had not exceeded 500,000 euros. With this strategy, Plug In Digital is targeting 30 million annual revenues in 2023 and intends to maintain its annual growth rate of 50%.
