Vietnam receives additional 6.27 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from European countries

Of the total, up to 4,000,230 doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer anti-COVID-19 vaccine were donated by the German government, 99,450 BioNTech/Pfizer doses came from the Luxembourg government, 159,120 BioNTech/Pfizer doses were donated by the government from Portugal and 2,012,960 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were donated by the United Kingdom, all through the COVAX vaccine mechanism.

German Ambassador to Vietnam Dr. Guido Hildner said that Germany has donated vaccines and medical equipment to Vietnam several times in 2021. With this new shipment of more than 4 million doses of BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines through COVAX, Germany continues its continued support of Vietnam. to fight and defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that in 2022, Germany will continue to show solidarity with Vietnam in fighting the effects of the pandemic and will provide new vaccines through the COVAX vaccine mechanism.

“We can only defeat the pandemic if it is controlled everywhere,” said the ambassador, stressing that Germany and the European Union support the COVAX vaccination campaign for fair and transparent access to vaccines against COVID-19 in the world. .

The recent delivery is the largest German donation of vaccine doses to Vietnam to date, bringing the total number of vaccines supplied by Germany to Vietnam to more than 10 million doses.

British Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward said: “This donation is part of the UK’s support for Vietnam’s roadmap to open up the economy by facilitating large-scale vaccine stockpiling.”

“We commit to stand with Vietnam to embrace a new chapter in 2022 when we can all live with COVID-19 again in peace and prosperity,” he promised.

The UK is currently one of the largest donors to COVAX facilities, providing over £548 million to supply vaccines around the world, including Vietnam.

The contribution also marks the British government’s third bilateral vaccine commitment to Vietnam after more than 727,000 doses of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in 2021.

In 2022, the UK will continue to strengthen the bilateral health partnership by helping Vietnam build a resilient health system by providing vaccines and medical supplies and facilitating opportunities for knowledge sharing between the two countries.

Representing the Embassy of Luxembourg in Vietnam, the Honorary Consul in Hanoi, Trân Hông Quang, stressed that “no one should be left behind in the fight against COVID-19”.

Luxembourg, a long-time supporter of global vaccination efforts, is actively involved in multilateral initiatives such as COVAX. At the end of 2021, Luxembourg doubled its financial contributions to the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment to €4 million to support the supply of vaccines worldwide and mitigate the effects of the double pandemic.

In fact, Luxembourg’s support for vaccination programs in Vietnam dates back to the 1990s and the development of a national cold chain for vaccines. Representing the Portuguese Embassy in Vietnam, Honorary Consul General Trân Kim Chung said that Portugal donated nearly 160,000 doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam through the COVAX mechanism last year, showing its solidarity with the Southeast Asian country in the fight against the pandemic. .

Portugal will continue to support Vietnam in the field of health care to face the challenges caused by the pandemic and ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for Vietnamese people, it added.
