Volkswagen has announced that their new 20 year old Volkswagen Golf R is their fastest R model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Volkswagen Golf R has worked 7:47.31 for 20 years, the car has a power of 333 hp. and has improved performance compared to the standard model.
The 20th Anniversary Sports Edition delivers 10 kW more power than the current production Golf R. Powered by this engine, the Golf 20 Years accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds; its electronically limited top speed is 270 km/h. Thanks to the significantly improved engine response, the increased power is also noticeable in everyday situations such as when overtaking. But it’s not just the power of the 2.0litre turbocharged fourcylinder that makes the special model the most dynamic Volkswagen R of all time on the Nordschleife. The clear increase in performance is also the result of extensive standard equipment with technical innovations such as the RPerformance package, Driving Dynamics Manager and RPerformance Torque Vectoring. What better way to test this combination than the Nürburgring Nordschleife? Here you can trace the evolution of powerful allwheel drive models of the Golf R over the past 20 years.
Benjamin Leuchter, touring car racer and Volkswagen R development driver, took on the challenge and tested the special version of the model on the legendary race track. He was also actively involved in the implementation of the RPerformance package for the Golf R “20 Years”. As well as the regular Comfort, Sport and Race driving profiles, the Special Edition model also comes standard with the optional Special and Drift profiles. For driving on the Nordschleife, the rider chose the “Special” driving profile, which was developed for this track. This profile gives the car a setup that meets the unique requirements of what is probably the most demanding race track in the world. This includes setting the dampers to a softer, more comfortable setting due to the huge stresses at the top performance level when cruising such trails.
