Wandercraft raises 40 million euros to launch its exoskeleton for home use

The start-up Wandercraft, specialized in dynamic walking robotics, has raised 40 million euros from the US fund Quadrant Management and Bpifrance. MACSF, Malakoff Humanis, AG2R La Mondiale and the investment funds Impact and Sofiouest also participated, as well as existing investors, XAnge, Eurazeo, Cemag Invest and LBO France.

A “general public” exoskeleton

Thanks to these funds, the company wants to accelerate the launch of an exoskeleton intended for use in the city and at home by people with partial or total walking disabilities. They will also be used to accelerate the deployment of Wandercraft’s historic “Atalante” exoskeleton, particularly in the United States.

Atalante is now used by a large number of health establishments, such as the Henri Mondor hospital group, the Rothschild hospitals in Paris and the Raymond-Poincaré hospitals in Garches en Hauts-de-Seine, which are part of Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP) – as well as the Trois Soleils clinic located in Boissise-le-Roi in Seine-et-Marne. The exoskeleton is dedicated to the care of spinal cord injuries (tetraplegia and paraplegia), people with multiple sclerosis, neuropathic or adult myopathies…

Relieve the work of medical staff

Wandercraft was founded by Nicolas Simon, Alexandre Boulanger, and Matthieu Masselin, all from the same Ecole Polytechnique class. After several years of development, in 2019 it commercialized Atalante, its “self-balancing” walking exoskeleton with no hands and no crutches. Together with machine learning systems, it helps people relearn how to walk while easing the burden on medical staff. Because nervous system conditions require intensive rehabilitation sessions.

In November 2019, the La Musse hospital of the La Renaissance Sanitaire foundation in Paris received the first copy of the Atalante series. The start-up announced its launch in the United States in October 2020, a country in which it had already forged numerous alliances (California Institute of Technology, University of Michigan).

Marketing an exoskeleton to the general public seems more difficult to achieve for many reasons, including the business model. At this point, Wandercraft has complementary health insurance MACSF, Malakoff Humanis, AG2R La Mondiale who are committed to “supporting the development of uses and the deployment of Wandercraft among their communities of policyholders and medical professions”, we can read in the press. release.
