WhatsApp hacked, Moroccans hurt

On November 16, 2022, a hacker put up for sale a database of 487 million phone numbers belonging to Moroccan WhatsApp users and other nationalities on a darknet forum.

This data breach concerns 84 countries, including Morocco. The hack affected 19 million users from Morocco and 1.5 million users from Tunisia. The most affected countries are Egypt (45 million users), Italy (35 million), USA (32 million), Saudi Arabia (29 million), France and Turkey (20 million).

For work, the hacker put up for sale on the forum of the hacker community on November 16 the data of almost half a million WhatsApp users. Cybersecurity media outlet CyberNews claims they have been able to confirm that the 1,097 hacked numbers are real numbers linked to real WhatsApp user profiles. However, one question remains unanswered: how did this data get leaked?

As of now, the Meta has not reported this incident. A similar incident happened in 2021. Personal data associated with 533 million Facebook accounts was posted on a hacker forum and potentially exposed to people with malicious profiles.
