When sex workers adopt blockchain

“I define myself as a ‘crypto whore.’ Sometimes I bill clients in cryptocurrencies, which doesn’t stop me from declaring my income! Mia More, creator of content for adults and escorts, has added virtual currencies to the means of payment that it accepts, in addition to the credit card or cash. Among sex workers, they are increasingly interested in these virtual currencies that are exchanged on decentralized computer networks, to compensate for the overturn of certain platforms and the reluctance of payment service providers. Among the latter, Visa and Mastercard, the most important in the sector, have, for example, terminated their contracts with the Pornhub site in December 2020. And, in August, it is the OnlyFans platform, nicknamed “the Instagram of porn”, which he wanted to ban all pornographic content, before reconsidering his decision.

A situation that generates instability for those who obtain income from these platforms. “I paid the price on my own site: overnight, my payment provider told me to stop, and I found myself with nothing,” says Nephael, a creator of erotic content for more than ten years and an ambassador for Pokmi, adult platform that does not sell -fungible tokens (NFT, for “non-fungible digital assets”, that is to say content authenticated by certificates of origin and ownership) and has its own cryptocurrency, the Poken. For many, the OnlyFans debacle was too much trouble. “With some colleagues, we wondered what to do if OnlyFans closed. So we started looking for alternatives, ”recalls Mia More.

Like her, some sex workers began studying cryptocurrencies, as specialized online platforms emerged. Whether it’s Nafty, XxxNifty, CumRocket on the US side, or Pokmi on the French side, they all offer to sell images in NFT form.

These new platforms also offer creators to be paid in cryptocurrencies. For Grégory Raymond, a journalist specializing in cryptoeconomics, it is not surprising that the sex industry is interested in it:

“It is an industry that has often been at the forefront in taking advantage of emerging technologies. This has been the case with VHS, DVD, Internet, streaming and now “crypto”. “

In addition to being paid in cryptocurrencies, these platforms also allow sex workers, such as Anaïs or Nephael, “to earn royalties every time content is resold,” explains Marco Garniga, co-founder of Pokmi. Especially since NFTs are sold at much higher prices than images on other platforms, “due to the large amount of capital from cryptocurrency investors buying and reselling NFTs,” explains Benjamin Fraden, director who operates the XxxNifty platform. In the latter, the NFTs are sold between 200 and 2,000 dollars (between 173 and 1,730 euros).
