While in South Korea, Tim Sweeney criticizes the monopoly of Apple and Google

The relationship between Apple and Epic is not about to heat up. The Epic CEO spoke today at a conference on anti-competition application ecosystems that took place in South Korea. The country was not chosen at random, as it recently passed a law requiring app stores to allow alternative payment methods. Unsurprisingly, Tim Sweeney used his speaking time to praise this new law before saying (again) all the bad things he thought about the Apple and Google monopoly.

For him, the ideal solution would be a single store that includes applications from Apple and Google, but also Xbox, Playstation, Switch or Microsoft Store. This system would allow to buy a single application accessible everywhere, where the current methods of Google and Cupertino are enclosed in an ecosystem. The CEO of Epic believes that this goes against the fundamental principle of the web and ironically: “If the global web had been designed after the smartphone, then Apple and Google would have blocked the launch of all web browsers on their platforms.”

The monopoly of Apple and Google has been brought to the table, about which Tim Sweeney is never stingy with criticism. He believes that no player should be able to use his control in one market to prevail in another. “Apple locks in a billion users in a store and a payment system,” he said. Then he recalled that if Cupertino is following up on the questionable demands of certain countries, it is turning a deaf ear to the orders of the Korean regulator: “Apple ignores the laws adopted by the Korean democracy. Apple must be stopped ”.
