Who is Angrboda, the new character introduced in God of War Ragnarok?

We reveal the origin of Angrboda, a young girl introduced in God of War Ragnarok.

Last week’s PlayStation Showcase was full of announcements. Three Marvel games are featured (even if we already knew one), including two from Insomniac. But everyone was waiting, of course, for God of War Ragnarok. And we have been rewarded for our patience. The new visuals are to die for, and especially the new characters. Not only Thor, who, like Tyr, respects the codes of Norse mythology. But the one, or rather the one that interests us today, is Angrboda, the young black girl who appears at the end of the trailer and promises us answers. Who is she?

According to this etymological dictionary, Angrboda means “one who heralds bad omens”. Angr means misfortune, bad luck, and Bota means to announce. According to Scandinavian tales and legends, Angrboda is a giantess or jötunn, like Loki. These two are not strangers to each other, quite the contrary. They are even lovers! She is not only the mother of the wolf Fenrir, but also Hel, the one who rules the realm of the dead, as well as Jörmungandr, the serpent of Midgard. Beautiful family! This would also earn her the moniker “mother of monsters,” as noted by Julia K. of Kotaku.

Of course, the developers from Santa Monica Studio took liberties by offering us a young dark-skinned girl. It is their merit that we know and see how invisible this community, my community, both in games and in the industry.

That doesn’t mean she’s successful every time, Barrett Wallace from Final Fantasy VII is in the lead, especially in the remake. I have to admit that Angrboda’s appearance at the end of the God of War Ragnarok trailer made me happy. Remember also that the series is pretty inclusive. It’s former black wrestler Shad Gaspar (sadly deceased in 2020) who did motion capture for Kratos, and black voice actor Christopher Judge lends his voice to him. In addition, you do not have to look for a long time what is hidden under the ashes…
