Why Few People Keep Updating to Windows 11

Whenever a major new version of Windows is released, Microsoft runs an aggressive ad campaign to get as many users as possible to update their devices.

This is certainly the case since the arrival of Windows 11 on October 5, the new operating system is a free update for all supported devices.

However, it seems that so far it has not had the desired effect. According to a survey of more than 10 million PCs by IT asset management company Lansweeper, which could analyze any network configuration, only 0.21% of all devices were running Windows 11. To put it in context, Windows XP had a 3.62% market share. Although it has not been supported by Microsoft since 2014.

There is a caveat to be aware of here. Despite the large sample size, Lansweeper focuses primarily on the business sector, possibly more on business users. As Lansweeper points out, the new Windows 11 requirements mean that many existing workstations are not compatible with the new operating system. Therefore, the 8.9% figure proposed by AdDuplex could better reflect the attitude of consumers, although it is only based on 60,000 respondents.

Either way, Microsoft has a lot of work ahead of it if it wants to make Windows 11 the dominant operating system in the near future. So why have so few consumers embraced the new operating system?

Strict material requirements

This is possibly the biggest barrier to entry, millions of Windows 10 devices just don’t support Windows 11. Microsoft has made the hardware requirements much more stringent by prioritizing security, with a recent 1GHz processor, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot among the most controversial updates.

Of course, there are ways around these requirements, but most just won’t want to run Windows 11 on a device that isn’t supported by Microsoft.

Most devices are not yet technically eligible

When Microsoft announced Windows 11 in June, it made it clear that the rollout would be gradual. Which makes sense since Windows 10 was installed on more than 1.3 billion devices.

But when Windows 11 was released on October 5, Microsoft also shared the official installation wizard and ISO file for that same version. This means that anyone with a compatible device can update their hardware immediately through an officially supported method.

However, this update must be installed manually. Unless you’re particularly interested in using Windows 11, there’s no rush, Windows 10 will be supported through October 2025 anyway.

Windows 11 is a great visual overhaul

Even when Windows 11 is available to everyone, users are likely to be hesitant to make the switch. The new operating system brings significant visual changes to a user experience that had become so familiar, many elements look or function differently.

What could upset many, in addition to that this also implies that new habits are adopted. With the exception of the unfortunate Windows 8, Microsoft’s operating system has kept the same look and feel for decades.

Many Windows devices are idle

Presumably these surveys are based on PCs that are used regularly, but it is clear that there are many idle devices that make the market share figures look worse than they are. It is highly unlikely that 3.5% of consumers use Windows XP on their primary computer, for example.

Not only are these devices definitely not compatible with Windows 11, they may never see the light of day again.

Of course, Microsoft has plenty of time to correct the situation when it comes to the popularity of Windows 11. The changes introduced have always polarized people’s minds, but it may take longer than expected for most devices eligible for it. Windows 10. take action.
