Xbox celebrates one of the greatest eras in video games with a nod to PS2, GameCube and Dreamcast

What just happened? It’s not often that a gaming company pays tribute to its competitors’ products, but it seems like Microsoft is happy to give credit where it belongs. On the occasion of Xbox’s 20th anniversary, the brand shared a tweet that contained an image of the four most iconic consoles ever created, the original Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube and Sega Dreamcast, with the caption: “L ‘one of the best moments in the game. ”

The official Xbox Twitter account tweeted the message using the hashtag # Xbox20. All four machines come from what is widely considered the sixth generation of video game consoles, which, as anyone can attest at the time, was truly one of the greatest eras in gaming.

In order of release date, the Sega Dreamcast was the first to be released, arriving in Japan in 1998 and the rest of the world in 1999 (with the exception of India, which did so in December 2000). Despite being the lowest-selling console of the four, those who owned one have fond memories of playing Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi. Unfortunately, Sega discontinued the Dreamcast on March 31, 2001.

Next up is the PlayStation 2. Released in 2000, Sony’s machine has become the most popular console of all time, with 155 million units sold. More than 3,800 games have been released on PS2, with more than 1,500 million copies sold.

GameCube also celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The Nintendo 64 successor may have sold 10 million fewer units (21 million in total) than its predecessor, but owners will always remember this fantastic controller and games like Eternal Darkness, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Resident Evil 4.

Finally, there is the Xbox. Microsoft’s first foray into the world of video game consoles, the first major produced by an American company since the Atari Jaguar in 1993, was more powerful than its competitors and the first to integrate a hard drive. With a list of games that includes Halo: Combat Evolved, it had a massive launch in the United States and sold 24 million units worldwide; more than the Sega and Nintendo machines, but it couldn’t compete with the PS2.

Xbox wasn’t the only one to doff its hat to compete with the products. PlayStation also congratulated the company on its anniversary.
