Xiaomi snatches the title of second smartphone supplier from Apple

Xiaomi is the second largest smartphone supplier in the world if we look at shipments for the second quarter of 2021. The Chinese company monopolizes 17% of the world market according to data released Thursday, July 15, 2021 by Canalys.

Xiaomi driven by strong growth

In the second quarter of 2021, global smartphone shipments increased by 12%. Samsung leads with 19% of shipments but closely followed by Xiaomi (17%). Apple completes this top three with 14% of smartphone shipments. “Xiaomi is rapidly expanding its activities abroad “, comments Ben Stanton, Canalys Research Manager. The Chinese manufacturer is indeed experiencing growth of 83% during this second quarter. In comparison, Samsung shows growth of only 15% and Apple of 1%.

Xiaomi “is now transforming its business model in order to move from challenger to historical operator with initiatives, such as the consolidation of distribution partnerships and more careful management of its old stocks, explains Ben Stanton. However, it remains largely mass-market oriented, and compared to Samsung and Apple, its average selling price is around 40% and 75% cheaper, respectively. The priority for Xiaomi is therefore to continue its growth in terms of sales in order to become the leading smartphone supplier. However, the Chinese manufacturer will have to compile with Oppo and Vivo, which are in ambush, and target the same markets.
