Get ready, in eastern Iowa. It certainly looks like Amazon is gearing up to build another massive warehouse, a first in the eastern half of the state.
Late last year, Amazon opened a distribution center in the central Iowa town of Bondurant, and Register of Monks reports that two months ago the company signed an agreement for a warehouse in Ankeny. Amazon also operates other facilities in West Des Moines, Grimes and other cities, including the “last mile” delivery station in Iowa City. Now all signs point to a new facility to help satisfy the voracious appetites of the online retailer’s customers.
Looks like Davenport is next on the list for a huge warehouse, which would provide 1,000 permanent positions. According to the Register of Monks, Davenport City Council is considering an agreement to develop a large facility that would be located near the Iowa-Illinois border. All signs point to this being an Amazon installation and if it goes through it would create at least half a dozen warehouses in Hawkeye state. Most surprisingly, all the others have been opened in the past year.
The Monks Register says Seefried Industrial Properties will build a warehouse west of Davenport Airport, north of I-80 (see image below). The cost would be $ 250 million and create about 1,000 jobs, $ 15 being the minimum wage. Although no one is saying who will be the tenant, screams Amazon. In February 2020, we informed you that Amazon’s new facility in Bondurant, Iowa had been confirmed and was creating around 1,000 jobs, with a minimum wage of $ 15 an hour.
Do you need more proof? The Monks Register reports that Seefried’s industrial property agreement indicates that the company that will use the warehouse had 1.298 million employees at the end of 2020. Amazon Annual Report 2020 “Last year we hired 500,000 employees and now we directly employ 1.3 million people worldwide. ”
There’s not a lot of suspense in there right now, is there? Amazon definitely seems to be on its way to the Quad Cities. That would seem to make a major Amazon presence at Cedar Rapids unlikely, but I wouldn’t rule it out given the growth of the business.
