Vincent Schodel, a sports economist and founder of the Sport Business Observatory, shared his thoughts on the “Gerard Lopez model” that should be carried over to the Girondins de Bordeaux.
“The Gerard Lopez model is competitive on credit. And to be honest, it depends on performance. With the resumption of LOSC, the club is on the verge of relegation for the first season. This means that there is no European Cup, therefore, no appraisal of the players, and therefore a debt, since there is no way to resell and replace the deficit resulting from normal activities. Despite the following seasons, which were sportingly interesting, the deficit still persisted, and in December last year the club was on the verge of bankruptcy. There, if Girondins de Bordeaux returns, so much the better, but it is clear that we can be worried about replicating this model, because the coming season is bound to be difficult. We don’t know the coach, we don’t know the players … “
