Corning has unveiled the latest addition to its Gorilla Glass material lineup, Gorilla Glass Victus 2. This new glass is designed to better withstand drops on rough surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.
According to Corning, 84% of consumers consider durability a top consideration when buying a smartphone. “Smartphones are central to our digital lives, and the need for exceptional scratch and drop resistance has only increased with our growing reliance on screens,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager of Gorilla Glass.

The company’s testing of the new Victus 2 glass has shown that it can withstand a drop of up to 1 meter onto a “concrete surface”. Corning claims that “competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers cannot withstand drops of half a meter or less.” Further testing showed that the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 could also survive a 2-meter drop (just over selfie height) onto an analog asphalt surface. It can also resist scratches “four times better” than its competitors.

Mr. Velasquez noted that the Victus 2 was designed with the larger and heavier modern smartphones in mind: “With more complex and varied designs, modern smartphones are almost 15% heavier and screen sizes are 10% larger than four years ago. both the load on the coverslip and the likelihood of damage.”
Corning said the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is currently “evaluated by several customers and expected to hit the market in the coming months.”
Previous versions of Gorilla Glass have shipped to more than 8 billion devices to date, and first-generation Victus Glass is included in devices such as Google’s Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and more.
