PS Plus on Xbox - Sony offer rejected by Microsoft

PS Plus on Xbox? Game Pass on PS5? All this could indeed be possible if Sony and Microsoft came to an agreement.

Hamburg. Sounds too crazy to be true, but that’s exactly what actually happened. Sony has reportedly made a serious attempt to bring its PS Plus premium service to Xbox. Ironically, the project failed because Microsoft didn’t want to authorize PS Plus on their console… and then tried to bring Xbox Game Pass to PS5 for their part.

Service name PS Plus (PlayStation Plus) Monthly cost €8.99 Provider Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Benefits 2 free games per month, access to PS4/5 online multiplayer, PlayStation Store exclusive discounts, 100 GB of online storage Active membership 48 million users* (as of December 2021)

PS Plus on Xbox and Game Pass on PS5 - it would be possible

How do we know about Sony’s plans for PS Plus for Xbox? Amazon’s takeover of Activision Blizzard is currently under review by the UK Market Conduct Authority (CMA). The authorities must determine whether this $68 billion mega deal is legitimate. As part of this walkthrough, gamers have already learned about Sony’s plans to release the PS6. For the lawsuit, Sony has released a partially redacted document that also provides information about the delusional PS Plus plan.

Sony seriously wanted to bring PS Plus to Xbox? It looks like Sony’s report indicates that Microsoft won’t allow PS Plus on Xbox, which means there have been attempts to do so. At the same time, Microsoft has also reportedly suggested porting Xbox Game Pass to PS5. If that were the case, Game Pass exclusive games could even be offered on the PlayStation.

It’s interesting in context because Microsoft seems to have been trying to defend itself against accusations of monopoly after the deal with Activision Blizzard. Microsoft’s argument is that by integrating Xbox Game Pass, Sony made an attempt to keep the coveted Call of Duty series, which is largely the subject of CMA litigation, but Sony has refused. Here is what Microsoft says in their official response:

There is no reason to think that buying the Call of Duty series will push subscribers to Xbox services. Sony has decided to block Game Pass on PlayStation, so it is not available on PlayStation.

Therefore, we know that there has been no agreement between Microsoft and Sony so far - neither party is interested in allowing its competitor to settle on its platform, be it Xbox or PS5.
