Several unions and associations demonstrate against the increase in gas prices in Martinique

Many unions and associations were represented this afternoon at the union house. The South Martinique Citizen Committee, the Dangerous Goods Carriers Union, as well as the SMT UNOSTRA Martinique, the Freight Carriers, the CPME and the CDMT met. At the center of the talks: the sharp rise in the price of gas in Martinique for several months.

Since April 2020, the 12.5 kg gas cylinder has gone from 20.35 euros to 30.56 euros for the month of October 2021. An increase of more than 10 euros in a year and a half. After having challenged the authorities on this issue but without tangible progress, these organizations ask to meet with the prefect of Martinique to consider a drop in the price of gas.

For the president of the dangerous goods transporters union, Raphaël Bordelais, this increase in a staple product in these proportions is inconceivable:

Gas is one of the primary needs of Martinique households. We cannot accept this increase today. We want to know in which pocket this money goes, because neither the carriers, nor the resellers, nor the principals received a penny.

These unions and associations invite the population to demonstrate in front of the prefecture next Tuesday at 8 in the morning to protest against this rate.
