Nearly one in five COVID-19 cases is related to the Omicron variant in Quebec. This is what the first results of the screening carried out by the Laboratoire de santé publique du Québec (LSPQ) on the cases reported on Tuesday revealed.
LSPQ’s research, released Thursday, indicates that Omicron generated 101 infections, out of 523 tested.
The laboratory, which is part of the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ), continues its analysis. The province registered 1,747 cases Tuesday and Quebec’s national director of public health, Dr. Horacio Arruda, has called for all of them to be tested. So far, almost a third of the cases have been examined.
In Quebec, 13 cases of the Omicron variant have so far been confirmed by sequencing, a more precise process than screening, which requires a few weeks of treatment.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, had indicated that the Omicron variant was “at our doorstep” and that the number of infections associated with it could be “underestimated for all kinds of reasons.”
Prime Minister François Legault invited the media to a press conference at 6 pm in Montreal. He will be accompanied by the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, as well as Dr. Horacio Arruda.
