Movies: TV still leads, but young people prefer VOD

According to an ARCOM study, film consumption, regardless of access mode, is very widespread, practiced by almost all French people: 98% of them are concerned, and 93% watch at least one film a month in 2022.

Television is the leading way to watch movies and affects 94% of French people. It is followed by:

  • room (83%),
  • then when watching video on demand (SVOD) by subscription (67%),
  • video-on-demand pay-per-view (VOD) service (34%)
  • or even on an illegal streaming or downloading site (29%).

Looking at paid consumption alone, it is dominated by video-on-demand (SVOD) subscriptions, with 51% of French people subscribing to it at home, compared to 22% for pay TV.

Television is also the mode of access most frequently used to watch movies: 86% of French people watch movies via this medium at least once a month (ie 91% of TV movie consumers). This outpaces SVOD consumption, which affects 61% of the French every month (i.e. 91% of users of these services). Theater consumption is more episodic in a context nonetheless still marked by the pandemic: 32% of French people surveyed go there at least once a month (i.e. 39% of theatergoers) and 50% go there less frequently.

The channel also offers the feature of equal treatment to all categories of the population: it refers to more than 90% of the various subgroups surveyed, regardless of their age group, gender, socio-professional category or area of ​​residence. residence.

Conversely, other modes of consumption show differences, especially by age group, with young people proving to be the biggest consumers of films, regardless of the channel in question.

In particular, pay-per-view or subscription video-on-demand services are much more used by the younger generation, with 90% of those under 35 using SVOD and 44% of pay-per-view video-on-demand, then declining. gradually in higher age groups, affecting only 34% and 16%, respectively, of those over 65 years of age.

ARCOM research confirms the evolution of consumer behavior towards streaming as the preferred viewing mode for young people. Although SVOD has a less favorable window than VOD for movies, it is more popular for watching movies due to its better price-to-film ratio than VOD, but primarily because SVOD takes advantage of the powerhouse that series is.
